A return to the blog!

Hello! I am back and at it. I've had a fantastic last week, so I felt that I had to fill you in! I <3 blogging, and I've missed it, and I've decided that it's time to seriously take it up again.

Topic for today: Independence Day weekend in New Jersey!

A Weekend in New Jersey: A fun-filled reunion with a bittersweet ending
This past weekend I drove up to NJ to visit 3 of my Obies. I completed the 8-hour drive on Thursday night (leaving shortly after work on Thursday). I arrived at about 1:40am to my sleepy-eyed friends, and we went to bed shortly thereafter. Friday was spent in NYC, which was an interesting experience. I've never spent an extended amount of time in NYC, and being a person who dislikes large cities, I was overwhelmed at first. Canal Street was probably not the best way to introduce me to the city, though it was an enlightening experience. Who knew that illegal merchandise could be purchased so easily? I didn't purchase anything, but I won't deny that I was tempted. We spent a lot of time in the ginourmous, 8-floors-plus-a-basement Macy's doing some shopping. Again, I didn't buy anything. We went to midtown for the rest of the day (look! I learned NYC terminology; I'm so proud). Central Park was lovely. I was beginning to feel more comfortable with this part of the city, but there were still too many people for my liking. We left in the evening, making it back to NJ in the late evening. It was a fun day, but I was still recovering from my lack of sleep the night before.

Saturday (aka 4 July, aka Independence Day) was spent primarily "down the shore." This is a phrase that frustrates me. Yes, it is the Jersey Shore, but everyone else I know of calls it "going to the beach." Why make up a whole phrase for something that already has a perfectly good phrase? Oh well. It was a relaxing day. I avoided getting burnt except for 2 spots on my legs, which, at the end of the day, looked like hot irons had been held again my legs for several minutes. Ouch. Being in the sun for that long is tiring, so we opted out of going to fireworks, but we BBQ'd and made smores over a fire in the backyard. Good times.

Sunday was a sad day. Elissa and Lindsey both left, leaving me with Carianne and her family. We spent it largely as a lazy day, but did make a brief venture to a mall where I purchased my new sunglass, which Brandi (one of the admissions interns) said make me look "fly." I like them. They're fun. Other than that, we pretty muched chilled in Carianne's house, which was perfectly fine with both of us.

Monday we went back into NYC, spent some time uptown, had lunch with Kate at a place called Josie's (an institution that any Oberlin student would be a fan of), and had quite the adventure at the library. I could go into details, but it's really not that fun of a story, and it primarily involves Carianne, and has very little to do with me. We left with our goal of tracking down some Bellini songs accomplished, and returned to New Jersey for one final evening. I assisted Carianne's mom's barbershop quartet in some of their rehearsing and then Carianne and I watched about half of Candide (the concert version conducted by Berstein himself) before heading to bed.

Tuesday, I left. It was a sad morning. It's easy to forget how much you miss being around people when you don't see them, but when you visit them for a short period it rekindles those feelings. I severely miss my Obies, and can't wait for their return to Oberlin in late August.
